The work

What we protect

Most businesses discover the gaps in their backup on the day they need it. The point of this work is to have that conversation earlier, when it is still cheap.

Files and shared drives

Whatever your people actually work in, backed up automatically with version history, so recovering a file someone overwrote on Tuesday does not require recovering everything.

Microsoft 365 and email

Microsoft protects their infrastructure, not your data. Deleted items age out, a compromised account can be emptied, and a departing employee can take a mailbox with them. Separate backup covers mail, calendars, contacts, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

Servers and systems

Full images where a machine matters, so recovery means bringing the system back rather than rebuilding it from memory and hoping the licences still work.

Offsite copies

At least one copy somewhere the fire, the flood, or the burglar cannot reach. Local copies make recovery fast, offsite copies make it possible.

Isolated from attack

Backups that ransomware cannot encrypt, because attackers now go for the backups first, knowing that a business without them pays.

Line of business applications

Accounting, practice management, industry specific systems. These are often the hardest to restore and the least likely to be covered, so we check them specifically rather than assume.

Two numbers worth agreeing before anything breaks

The industry uses acronyms for these. You do not need them. You need to have decided the answers with someone before an incident, because the cost of the solution follows directly from what you say.

How much work can you afford to lose?

If backups run nightly and something fails at 4pm, you lose the day. For many businesses that is survivable and the cheapest answer. For some, an hour is too much. That choice sets how often copies are taken, and it is genuinely your call to make.

How long can you be down?

Restoring a few files is minutes. Rebuilding a server from an offsite copy over a business internet connection can be a day or more. If a day would be intolerable, the design has to change and so does the price.

Test restores

We restore from backup on a schedule and show you it worked. This is the step almost everyone skips, and skipping it is how businesses discover that the job had been failing silently for eight months.

Before you ask

Microsoft 365 backs up our email already, does it not?

No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding we meet. Microsoft guarantee their service is available, not that your data is recoverable. Their own agreement recommends third party backup. Deleted mail ages out permanently, and a compromised or departing user can take a mailbox with them.

We copy files to an external drive. Is that enough?

It is better than nothing and it fails in three common ways: it is usually connected, so ransomware encrypts it too; it lives in the same building as the thing it is protecting; and nobody notices when it silently stops.

How often should backups run?

It depends entirely on how much work you can afford to redo. Nightly suits many businesses. Some need hourly. We would rather ask you than pick a default and let you find out later.

What does recovery actually look like?

For a deleted file, minutes. For a mailbox, usually under an hour. For a failed server, it depends on the design, which is exactly why the targets get agreed in advance rather than discovered.

Do you test the backups?

Yes, on a schedule, with the result reported to you. An untested backup is an assumption, and it is the assumption that ends businesses.

What about ransomware specifically?

Modern ransomware looks for backups before it encrypts anything, because a business that can restore does not pay. That is why copies are kept where an attacker with your credentials cannot reach or alter them. See security and compliance for the rest of the picture.
